The ‘Boonah Tragedy’

I have been able to visit a number of war graves around Perth recently, including those of Australians and New Zealanders who died of the influenza during December 1918 and January 1919 during the ‘Boonah Incident’.

There are eleven graves at the East Rockingham Pioneer Cemetery including that of Albert Sayers. an Aboriginal man from Busselton.

A further 16 ‘flu graves are located at the Perth War Cemetery. These soldiers (and a nurse) were originally interred at the Woodman’s Point Quarantine Station south of Fremantle but were relocated in 1958. One war grave remains at Woodman’s Point.
