Just back from Borneo…

I’ve just returned from Borneo where I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit the memorial at Kundasang in the shadow of Mount Kinabalu to those who died in the Sandakan death marches during 1945. Only a handful of the 100 or so men forced by the Japanese to march from Sandakan on the coast to the inland town of Ranau survived. Most of the dead (and all of the survivors) were Australians. More information on the death marches is available from the websites of the Australian War Memorial and historian Lynette Silver.DSC_0584
